I spent a week in Atlanta last week on business and the upside to being away from home for a week is knowing you’re going to eat well in the ATL. I could spend days talking about all my top faves in Atlanta because it is truly a melting pot of flavors and creative chefs. I had seen a clip on Cypress Street Pint and Plate and knew it was on the list of “must try”. More specifically, I’d heard about their Sublime Special hamburger and despite my lack of passion for ground beef I wanted to give this burger a chance. The burger was literally the best burger I have ever eaten and I must say that having it snuggled between two glazed Sublime donuts was probably the “win me over” factor.
I’ve eaten Sublime Donuts around Atlanta before but never actually been to their bakery. I made it my mission to pay them a visit before my departure. I wanted to go early in the morning to guarantee (a) freshness and (b) optimal selection. Just going on the deliciousness of their donuts, I was envisioning a retro, funky stand alone bakery. So you can imagine my confused surprised to find them in a very unassuming strip mall of sorts (although having a tatoo parlor next door was ironically appropriate.)
Parking wasn’t a problem and in Atlanta, that’s a huge plus. I walked into the small bakery to the most delicious sights and smells of fresh fried yeast and sweetly delicious toppings. I asked the guy assisting me to please make me an assorted dozen. (By the way, keep in mind you’ll get a heck of a deal by just buying a dozen or more, so there’s an incentive to buy more!) Of the amazingly beautiful donuts he placed in my box, the one that rang out to me was the sea salt caramel with balsamic drizzle. I was captivated by the sound of sweet and savory donut!
I’m not going to pretend to be the expert on all things sweet, but the sea salt and caramel with balsamic drizzle was a perfect dessert! It had all the elements you want in a sweet treat and yet enough character to make your taste buds pop! I tried others like the Mocha A-Town with Bavarian cream and the S’mores which were all fantastic. But I definitely recommend you giving the Sea Salt Caramel with balsamic a try next time your near downtown Atlanta.
